Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2017 will be conducted by a National Law University based on the system of rotation which is followed for determining the conducting institution of the exam. CLAT tests a student on five major areas: English including comprehension, General Knowledge/Current affairs, Elementary mathematics, Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. The most crucial step towards CLAT preparation is identifying your weak and strong areas.

Step 1: CLAT Coaching & Mentor

National Level Entrance exams are very different from the usual school exams. Students are required to give their best attempt in a limited time. The aspirants may face problems while juggling between different subject areas. An experienced guidance under a coaching institute or mentor will go a long way in giving an edge to an aspirant's preparation. A mentor will help in the identification of weak and strong area analysis which will help an aspirant in deciding his or her approach towards each section of the CLAT papers

Step 2: Online Exam

All the aspirants need to be mindful of the fact that CLAT is conducted online. It is extremely essential for aspirants to know how to take an online exam, as this experience is very different from taking a paper based exam. It is highly recommended that the students must practice lots of online mocks and practice papers.

The aspirants must note here that an online exam has the following advantages over paper based exams:

  1. Navigating between questions is easy
  2. Review is easy as the attempted and un-attempted questions appear in different colours
  3. Changing incorrect answers is really easy as compared to an OMR sheet.
  4. Answers can be marked with a simple click which saves times unlike the filling of the circles in an OMR sheet.
Step 3: Strategise as per the Latest Syllabus and Pattern of CLAT

As an aspirant, you must know the syllabus and paper pattern thoroughly and prepare accordingly. You must also take a look at the previous years CLAT papers and also practice ample Mock Tests.

Step 4: Section-Wise Preparation Strategy
English:
  • This section tests the proficiency of a student in comprehension and grammar. You should aim at building a good vocabulary. This cannot be done overnight, hence it is advisable to get into the habit of regular reading of a newspaper and any magazine which covers the contemporary events well. This will also help with the General Knowledge section.
  • Get your hands on a word list and try to go through the words starting from one alphabet everyday and identify the words you are not familiar with and try to understand their meaning and usage.
  • Learn the art of breaking up a sentence in order to understand its meaning more clearly.

General Knowledge & Current Affairs:

This section can go a long way in giving a winning edge to the performance of a student who has an interest in newspaper reading and stays aware about the latest happenings and events. The only way of attempting this section well is to follow a newspaper regularly. Coaching Institutes and mentors also provide the aspirants with general knowledge modules.

Mathematics:

This section carries a weightage of 20 marks out of a total 200 marks.

  • This section will test an aspirant's knowledge of elementary mathematics up to class 10th.
  • Get a grip on the fundamental topics and know your basics well.
  • As practice is the key in mathematics so practice as many test papers as you can.

Logical Reasoning:

This section tests an aspirant's ability to identify patterns, understand logical links and correct illogical statements.

  • The questions asked in this section are on syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies, etc.
  • Most of these questions can be easily solved by practicing the trick methods.
  • Speed practice is essential for questions under this section. Hence, know all types of reasoning questions and practice them to increase speed and accuracy.

Legal Aptitude:

This is the only section of CLAT which is absolutely new for a CLAT aspirant. So an experienced CLAT mentor and good guidance can help a student in getting a high score in this section. This section can play a defining role in determining an aspirant's overall Score. It also happens to be the tie-breaker for similar scores in the final results.

  • The legal fact and legal G.K questions can be attempted well by identification and memorization of important constitutional articles, landmark and recent judgements and new laws/ amendments.

Step 5: Time management

Managing time during the preparation as well as during the exam plays a crucial role. Reading comprehension questions in the English section, the legal aptitude section and the logical reasoning sections are all very time consuming.

  • It is advisable to have a structured strategy for attempting the paper.
  • Spend more time on strengthening your weaker areas than on polishing your strong areas.
  • While attempting questions do not waste a lot of time on a question which you do not understand, move on to the next one soon.
