First Step towards a career in Law: CLAT

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is an entrance test for admission to 17 prominent National Law Universities in India. The test is taken after 12th grade for admission into BA LLB integrated five year course and after Graduation for LLM course. The test was conducted for the first time in 2008. It is a two hour online test. The test is conducted by these institutes on rotational basis; CLAT 2016 will be conducted by Rajeev Gandhi National Law University, Patiala.

Law as a Career

For a layman, law means a legally enforceable system of rules and guidelines. But career as a lawyer is the most sought after and in demand vocation in today’s times. Now days the ambit of lawyers has expanded from just black robes in courts to corporate offices, NGOs, movies and media. There is an unprecedented demand of lawyers in different fields and this makes it a lucrative career for law aspirants. The different options lawyers have in terms of their working field are can be practicing law in the courts, being an in-house corporate lawyer for a corporate entity or company which could be an MNC, Private company, Private Bank , a Government Agency or a Public Sector Undertaking.

CLAT Eligibility

For BA LL.B:

Passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with the minimum of:- (1) Forty-five percent (45%) marks in case of candidates belonging to Unreserved/OBC/ (Specially Abled Persons) Categories and (2) Forty percent (40%) marks in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST Category Candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination in April/May 2016 are also eligible for appearing in CLAT-2016 examination provisionally.

There is no upper age limit is prescribed for appearing in CLAT-2016

For LLM:

LL.B. or equivalent degree in law examination with a minimum of 55% marks in case of Unreserved/OBC/ (Specially abled persons) categories and 50% marks in case of SC/ST category Candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination in March/April 2016 are also eligible to appear in CLAT-2016 examination provisionally.

No upper age limit is prescribed for appearing in CLAT-2016

CLAT Exam Pattern

CLAT is an online exam which has 200 questions and carries 200 marks. The students are awarded 1 mark for every correct answer and there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. Following is a brief overview of the CLAT Exam Pattern:

CLAT Exam Syllabus:


English:

The English section tests the candidate's proficiency in the English language based on comprehension passages and grammar. Candidates are questioned on their understanding of the passage and its central theme, meanings of words used therein etc. The grammar section requires correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc. The CLAT syllabus for this section includes:

  • Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, analogies
  • English Comprehension: A paragraph is given and Questions are asked from that paragraph
  • Proficiency: Idioms and phrases fill in the blanks, one word substitution, cloze test, sentence improvement, rearrangement of sentences in paragraph, jumbles sentences.
  • English Usage Errors: Spot the error and correct the sentence, spelling mistakes, use the correct word.
Mathematics:

The important topics for this section are:

General Knowledge and Current Affairs:

The General knowledge section tests students on static as well as current general knowledge. Questions on current affairs test candidates on their knowledge of national and international current affairs. It's important that students are well versed with the Current affairs of mainly the previous year and all the relevant news of the past one year.

Legal Aptitude

The main aim of this section is to test the candidate's aptitude towards Law. It includes three types of questions:

  • Principle-Fact Questions: Legal principle is applied to the given facts to arrive at a conclusion. Truth of these principles has to be assumed as a matter of rule. I.e. Principle is always right.
  • Legal Fact Question: constitutional articles(fundamental rights, directive principles etc), landmark judgments and amendments
  • Legal G.K: Current as well as static. Recent amendments/changes in law, recent judgments, new appointments: judges, law minister, members of law commission.
Logical Reasoning:

The purpose of the logical reasoning section is to test the candidate's ability to identify patterns, logical links and rectify illogical arguments. This section includes a variety of logical reasoning questions such as syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies, etc. However, visual reasoning is not tested in this section.

Apart from CLAT there are various entrance exams for admission into a wide range of law programs, these are:

  • Punjab University PU CET (LAW): This exam is conducted for entrance into B.A./B.Com-LL.B (Hons) Five Years Integrated Course at Punjab University, Chandigarh.
  • AILET: (All India Law Entrance Test): All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) is conducted for admission into undergraduate and postgraduate courses in law offered by National Law University (NLU), Delhi.
  • Delhi University Law Entrance Exam: Delhi University is one of the top universities in India. The Faculty of Law conducts an all-India Entrance Test for admission to the LLB (three years) and LLM courses.
  • ILICAT (Indian Law Institute Common Admission Test) : Indian Law Institute Common Admission Test (ILI CAT) is conducted by Indian Law Institute, New Delhi for admission to its LLM program.
  • LSAT (Law School Admission Test)–India : LSAT- India is used for admission into multiple law colleges across India for the three-year Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree program and the five-year B.A. LL.B. degree program
  • SET-LAW: This exam is conducted by Symbiosis International University for admission into their B.A.LL.B and B.B.A.LLB courses.
  • AMU Law Entrance Exam: (Aligarh Muslim University Law Entrance Exam) : Aligarh Muslim University Law Entrance Exam conducted by Aligarh Muslim University for admission in to the LLB course.
